Why a Thistle?
I have a rich ancestral history with the country of Scotland. Their beautiful land, ancient architecture, lore, and legends are a part of my DNA. I have always been fascinated by their national flower, the Thistle. The story behind the beautiful thistle is one that is still with me to this day and is a large part of why I do what I do. The thistle not only represents national pride for the Scottish people, but also their resilience as a culture. Known not only for their beautiful purple plumes, but also for their resiliency. Legend has it that when the Norsemen attempted a stealth attack on the shores of Scotland, when they arrived and stepped onto the land barefoot, the thistles were so thick they cried out in pain and the Scottish who defended the land were alerted in time to drive off the invaders. This led to the thistle becoming a symbol of protection and resilience for the Scottish people.
Although the thistle is referred to as a flower, it is technically a weed. It is very difficult to kill and can thrive in the harshest of weather and terrains. As you peruse my artwork, you may notice thistles hidden in certain pieces. Not only does the thistle allude to my own story, but I believe it holds the story of humanity as well. We ALL struggle to survive at times in our lives. Sometimes we feel like giving up. Sometimes survival gets so difficult that it is hard to focus on the next breath. When I see a thistle, I am reminded that just like the beautiful flower, I have been through hard things. And also like the thistle, My track record of making it through hard things is 100%. It is my hope that when you see the thistle in my logo, but also my artwork, you will be reminded of the same.
